The Power of 100: A Simple Concept with a Huge Impact

This blog is written by guest writer, Katie Bruno.

As a young professional woman, I am involved in a number of groups and organizations in my community from serving on boards and committees of non-profits to organizing community service projects for my young professional group to teaching financial literacy classes. Being involved in the community is important to me both personally and professionally. I find that giving back helps to teach us understanding and compassion for others and for me, it’s extremely rewarding.

One of my personal favorites that I believe has one of the greatest impacts on the community is 100 Women Who Care. We are a giving circle. Our growing group is local Omaha women who pool our resources to make a collective donation to a charity that we choose as a group.

Giving circles are very simple and require very little commitment from our members. We don’t have a cumbersome administrative process or member requirements and we don’t have to engage in time-consuming fundraising or planning. 100 Women Who Care meets quarterly for a one-hour meeting, learn about local charities and each member donates $100 to a charity that our group selects. Because every member is writing a check to the selected charity, we have the potential to give a gift of up to $10,000 plus in a single night – far more than I would be able to give on my own. All of the leaders and members of our 100 Women Who Care giving circle are volunteers. 100 Women Who Care does not keep any of the money that is collected. 100% of your donation goes directly to the selected charity on the night they are selected. By joining forces with other caring women, we are able to amplify the impact of our dollars and make a considerable collective difference.

During our meetings, any member can nominate local charities, non-profits, or worthy causes. Our women who would like to present will attend the meeting and put the name of the charity they want to speak about into a drawing. Three names are then drawn at random during the meeting and the member will have 5 minutes to present on their cause and organization. We end with an all-member vote on which cause to support. When I’m in the room hearing my fellow members talk about the causes that matter to them, I am filled with optimism. Together, we learn more about our community and hear firsthand about what touching each other’s hearts. It’s a very special, extraordinary experience every time. At each of the 100 Women Who Care’s meetings, I learn about at least one new organization I wasn’t previously aware of. This is another way to create awareness and understanding of the strong web of support agencies in the Greater Omaha area.

We support a broad spectrum of organizations and causes.  We’ve supported organizations whose missions are helping children placed in foster care, eliminating food waste, cancer care support, fighting sex trafficking, homelessness and much more. Our most recent donation selected in January 2021 was for the Heart Ministry Center. Located in North Omaha, the center has always aimed at people needing life’s most basic necessities. They serve those seeking food, clothing, shelter, and financial assistance.

100 Women Who Care is for you if:
  • You don’t have time in your busy life to volunteer but have been wanting to help those in need,
  • You are involved with other groups but are interested in meeting other charitably-minded women in the Greater Omaha area;
  • You want 100% of your donations to go directly to a local charity;
  • You want your $100 donation to become a part of a larger amount of money by joining together with other women—creating a powerful impact in our local area.
As always, we welcome new members or those who want to come and experience a meeting as a guest before joining.
