Guest blog: Women and girls deserve better than 1.9%

This blog is guest written by Jo Giles, executive director of the Women’s Fund of Omaha

This fact should make you sit up and pay attention—only 1.9% of charitable giving goes to nonprofits focused on issues impacting women and girls.

At Women’s Fund of Omaha, we are giving 100% every day to advance gender equity in our communities. We are focused on the most critical challenges facing anyone who experiences gender-based oppression and work to identify issues through research, fund solutions by investing grant money in local nonprofits and lead dynamic change by advocating for effective public policy solutions.

Each person who invests in our organization allows us to make an even bolder impact. Today, I invite you to support the Women’s Fund of Omaha and our efforts to advance gender equity. Our work is too critical to only be funded at 1.9%.

Make a declaration for gender justice with your dollars.

  • A donation of $25 helps us to purchase books and host educational trainings.
  • An investment of $50 supports our efforts to increase STI testing and treatment access throughout the Omaha metro.
  • A gift of $70 covers mileage for our advocacy team to meet with policymakers in Lincoln.
  • Your donation of $100 ensures domestic violence survivors have a safe place in an emergency.
  • Your generous gift of $215 helps us close the gender pay gap that has, on average, a woman earning only $785 for every $1,000 earned by a man in Nebraska.

Lead the Change on Thursday, October 12

Our Lead the Change annual celebration is on Thursday, October 12 and will feature Geena Davis, Academy Award-winning Actor, Author, and Founder and Chair of Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, as our keynote speaker. While in-person tickets are sold out, virtual tickets are available. Get online access to the event at OmahaWomensFund.org/Lead-The-Change.

In addition to hearing from the multi-talented Davis, the Women’s Fund will recognize local nonprofits and leaders working to advance gender equity, share an update on our impact in the community and award grants to programs that make a positive impact on the lives of those who experience gender-based oppression.

Get your virtual ticket before October 11

Know this: At the Women’s Fund, we are committed to doing better than 1.9% but we need you to join us and invest in this work so everyone can reach their full potential. When you become a monthly supporter, you’re declaring your support for our mission and values:

Equity – We are committed to social justice. We actively acknowledge and continuously work to disrupt systemic oppression and remove barriers to equity in our own organization and throughout all of our partnerships and initiatives. We consistently evaluate the impact of our work through an anti-oppressive lens.

Bold Impact – We impact large-scale innovative systems changes aligned to our vision for the future. We use our privilege as funders and individuals to further our mission. We are willing to show up imperfectly in the name of progress.

Collaboration – We believe that we will go further together than alone. We work through partnerships and relationships built on mutual trust and understanding. We center the voices of those who have been most impacted by the systems we aim to disrupt. We actively work to use our position as a funder to hold our partners accountable to our values.

Community Voice – We listen to, amplify and center the voices of those with lived experience who live at the margins. We utilize our resources and relationships to best amplify those perspectives in our community. We strive to disrupt systems of oppression by amplifying diverse lived experiences.

Intersectionality – We value all aspects of identity and recognize that each create unique experiences of discrimination, power and privilege. This guides the complex and trauma-informed responses and solutions we advocate for in the community.

Bodily Autonomy – We believe every body is sovereign unto itself. This belief is a cardinal direction for the work that we do and informs our stance on issues. We respect a person’s ability to control their own decisions about their bodies, and work to protect this right.

Gender equity matters. And so does where you choose to invest your gifts. Help us do better than 1.9% for women, girls and femmes today.
