Stories

Some call it stories. Others call it a blog. But here you will find nuggets of goodness to use and -- you guessed it -- SHARE!

Volunteers are #1 at the #1 Zoo

Whether you are interested in the environment, conservation of animal habitats, or endangered species, or you like to reach out to others to teach them about these subjects, Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium and Wildlife Safari Park has new, short-term opportunity that might be perfect for you.

Spend time with like-minded individuals while helping the Zoo accomplish its many goals by becoming a Zoo Volunteer!

The Zoo has had a lot of visitors this summer who want to see the zoo voted #1 by its guests. Help give them a great experience by joining the Summer Docent Program!

Summer docents engage visitors at education stations around the zoo! At each station, they need energetic volunteers to help facilitate hands-on activities and share basic animal information and simple conservation concepts with visitors. This is an excellent way to join the zoo's mission to inspire, educate, and engage visitors to become life-long stewards for the conservation of animals and their habitats. Docents provide brief educational interactions with hundreds of visitors per shift.

Punkie, a Summer Docent volunteer, shares, "My favorite part of the summer program is engaging with guests from Omaha and all over the country, and offering information they wouldn't otherwise receive about our Zoo, our animals and our city."

"By giving a few hours volunteering, a big impact is made on people who receive a little education  about animals and conservation. It’s very personally fulfilling to know that a small effort leaves an impact. It's nice to be around excited, happy people!"

Summer docents have the opportunity to volunteer daily though August 2024. Volunteer shifts are 9:30-11:45 a.m., 11:30 a.m.-1:45 p.m., 1:30-3:45 p.m. It is great if volunteers sign up for one shift per week.

When summer is over, volunteers who would like to continue as docents at the Zoo will be invited to apply for their full docent training and onboarding Fall 2024!

Send your interest now and Zoo representatives will connect with you soon:
