Join our Browse Department as they process tree limbs and branches for storage. Many people think "Browse" refers to humans looking around and browsing the Zoo, but the department gets its name from the work they do to harvest and prepare food and enrichment for the animals to browse! Many of our plant-loving herbivores are "grazers," meaning that they prefer to graze at ground-level, and some of our other herbivores are "browsers," which browse on various shrubs and trees. When we use the word "browse" at the Zoo, we are referring to plant material that can be used for consumption or enrichment by our browsing animals. Browse is an important part of some of these animals' diets and is full of nutrition herbivores need. It also provides an enrichment opportunity for them by promoting natural foraging behaviors. Browse volunteers increase our capacity to harvest and store this critical element for our animals' well-being.
Browse volunteers MUST wear close-toed shoes (hiking shoes or athletic shoes are recommended,) and we advise bringing a full water bottle, wearing sunscreen, and if you have a pair of work/garden gloves, those are helpful, too! You will also want to make sure you wear comfortable clothes that allow for movement and that you are willing to get a little dirty.
Youth ages 13-17 are eligible for this volunteer assignment, but they MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A PARENT/GUARDIAN who is actively volunteering with them.
Volunteers can help us out one time or every time!
