What We Do
The BLUEBARN Theatre exists to enhance the cultural life of Omaha by producing professionally executed plays that ignite a passion for the art form. BLUEBARN's mission is dedicated to theatre’s most important tradition: to provoke thought, emotion, action, and change.
BLUEBARN celebrates 30 years of cheerily subversive live theatre, hundreds of shows and over 3,000 performances, each broadening Omaha's exposure to triumphantly theatrical professional productions. Every season's repertoire consists of five mainstage plays diverse in theme and style, ranging from works by some of America's most renowned modern playwrights, to regional premieres of work produced on the coasts, to new works by writers whose voices deserve to be heard.
Plays are carefully chosen to provide experiences that engage the entire self, connecting our audiences to one another and the world around them. Through theatre, BLUEBARN provides a civic space for communal reflection and celebration - a way to explore complex issues, challenge our assumptions, recognize our common bonds, and find the joy and hope to chart a course forward, together. With its engagement events and partnerships with social, civic, and advocacy organizations, BLUEBARN ensures that the conversation continues, and the work remains impactful long after our audiences leave the theatre.
The BLUEBARN is the only contemporary, fully-professional theatre in Omaha. Motivated by the belief that all artists should make a living wage, we created The Artists' Fund to support our creatives not only with applause but with a paycheck. Anchoring the professional arts culture in Omaha, and supporting a thriving creative class, BLUEBARN is artist driven, art forward, and community focused.
