Nebraska Medicine Volunteer Opportunities

The mission of Volunteer Services is to provide meaningful service opportunities and recognition for volunteers in support of the Nebraska Medicine mission of Serious Medicine, Extraordinary Care.

 

Nebraska Medicine has a variety of volunteer opportunities on all campus. Whether you are volunteering to explore career interests, offer service to the community, use professional skills, expand your circle of friends, or to make a difference in the lives of others, volunteerism greatly benefits the medical center and our patients.

 

Below are brief descriptions of the opportunities found at the Nebraska Medicine campuses.

Ambassadors (NMC, Bellevue & Village Pointe)

  • Be a welcoming presence to guests at the main entrances of the medical center campuses and help them navigate through the facility. (Weekdays (BMC & VP), 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. Weekdays (NMC) 7a.m. – 5 p.m.)

Anatomic Pathology (NMC)

  • Support Anatomic Pathology by assisting staff with slide delivery and filing of results for future reference. 

       (Weekdays, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.)

Child Life / Inpatient Pediatrics (NMC)

  • To assist the Child Life staff in providing diversionary activities for hospitalized children, help promote a positive sense of self-esteem and a positive hospital experience. (Weekdays & Weekends, 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.)

Must be at least 19 years old to volunteer in this unit.

Clinic/Dept Assistant (NMC, Bellevue & Village Pointe)

  • Assist patients and families in clinic and provide administrative support to staff.

Departments included but not limited to: (Weekdays, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)

  • Cancer Clinic (NMC) - NEW!
  • Bariatric Clinic (NMC)
  • Diabetes Center (NMC)
  • Home Instead Center for Successful Aging 
  • Midtown Clinic (NMC)
  • Resource & Wellness Center (NMC)
  • Olson Women’s Health (NMC) – NEW!
  • Physical Therapy (NMC)
  • Wound Clinic (NMC)
  • Multi Organ Transplant Clinic (NMC)

 

CornerStone Gifts & Clarkson Gift Shop (NMC)

  • Assist customers as they shop for gifts, flowers, candy, and other merchandise at the gift shops. Proceeds from the shops are donated to support special projects at the medical center.  (Weekdays 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

Emergency Department (NMC & Bellevue – NEW!)

  • Support families and staff by performing a variety of essential non-medical duties. Must be at least 18 years of age to volunteer. (NMC - Weekdays & Weekends, 8 a.m. – Midnight Bellevue – 10 a.m. – 10 p.m.)

Equipment Transporter – NEW!

  • Transport reusable equipment to Clarkson Tower sterile processing from bed floors throughout the Nebraska Medicine 42nd Street Campus.   (Weekdays & Weekends, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.)

Hospitality Cart (NMC Buffett & Bellevue)

  • Enhance the comfort of adult patients and their guests by sharing items from the hospitality cart …Crossword Puzzles, Word Search, Magazines, Playing Cards, etc. (Weekdays, 10a – 2p)

Infusion Center (NMC & Village Pointe)

  • Support patients and their families as they attend clinic visits and infusion treatments. Perform hospitality and department assistant tasks. (Weekdays 8 a.m. – 4:30p.m.)

Inpatient Unit & Patient Support – NEW!

  • Support the patient floors by doing non-clinical tasks. Visit with patients explaining the patient guides, educational tablets, how to order their meals and other services to improve patient experience. 
    • Cardiac Intensive Care/Progressive Care 

(Weekdays & Weekends, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.)

  • Clarkson 4th floor Medical Surgical Unit
  • Heart & Vascular Unit
  • Lied Tower
  • Neurology

Patient Mail (NMC)

  •     Brighten patients’ day by delivering their mail and Well Wishers e-mails. (Weekdays, afternoons) 

Pulmonary Diagnostic Ambassadors (NMC) – NEW!

  • The volunteers will improve the patient’s experience by escorting patients throughout the campus, other appointments, and entrances. (Weekdays, 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.)

Radiology Ambassadors (NMC)

  • The volunteers will improve the patient’s experience by escorting patients throughout the Radiology areas, other appointments, and entrances. (Weekdays, 7 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

Surgery Ambassadors (NMC, Bellevue – NEW!)

  •     Be a welcoming presence to guests in the surgical areas and help them navigate through the facility.

    (Weekdays, 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.)


 

Volunteer Opportunities – Additional Training & Requirements

Angel Hearts & Hands (NMC, Bellevue & Village Pointe)

  • Individual volunteers or groups interested in knitting, sewing, and crafting projects to benefit our patients. Projects include, but are not limited to, Prayer Shawls, Lap Blankets, and Turbans.

Animal Assisted Therapy (Pet Therapy) (NMC, Bellevue & Village Pointe) 

  • Pet Therapy at Nebraska Medicine is a method of reducing stress incurred by giving patients the benefits of shared pet companionship. Your dog must be a certified pet therapy dog with a recognized organization to participate. (Weekdays, Varied Hours)

Spiritual Care (NMC & Bellevue)

  • Ensures patients are connected with their spiritual communities and/or the medical center’s resources.
  • An interview with a Spiritual Care manager is required prior to placement. (Weekdays & Weekends)
