The mission of Volunteer Services is to provide meaningful service opportunities and recognition for volunteers in support of the Nebraska Medicine mission of Serious Medicine, Extraordinary Care.

Our volunteers are committed to serving the patients, families, visitors and staff of Nebraska Medicine by providing essential non-medical support a variety of service areas.

Nebraska Medicine provides a dynamic range of volunteer opportunities. A variety of service areas can be found at all locations. Below are brief descriptions of a few of the opportunities found at Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center and Village Pointe Health Center.
 

Ways to volunteer and make a difference

Ambassador (Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center, Village Pointe Health Center)

  • Be a welcoming presence for guests at our main entrances, helping them navigate their way through the facility. (Weekdays, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

Child Life (Nebraska Medical Center)

  • To assist the Child Life staff in providing diversionary activities for pediatric patients, help promote a positive sense of self-esteem and a positive hospital experience. (Seven days a week, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.)

Outpatient Clinic Assistant (Nebraska Medical Center and Village Pointe Health Center)

  • Assist patients and families in clinic and provide administrative support to staff. Departments include, but are not limited to: (Weekdays, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)
    • Diabetes Center (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Heart and Vascular Center (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Home Instead Center for Successful Aging (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Internal Medicine Specialty Clinic (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Midtown Clinic (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Multi Organ Transplant Clinic (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Resource and Wellness Center (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Surgery Ambassador (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Wound Clinic (Nebraska Medical Center)
    • Volunteer Services Office (Nebraska Medical Center)

Emergency Department (Nebraska Medical Center)

  • Support families and staff by performing a variety of essential non-medical duties. Must be at least 18 years of age to volunteer. (Weekdays and Weekends, 8 a.m. to midnight.)

Hospitality Cart (Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center)

  • Enhance the comfort of adult patients and their guests by sharing items from the hospitality cart …crossword puzzles, word search, magazines, playing cards, etc. (Weekdays, hours vary)

Infusion Therapy and Cancer Clinics (Nebraska Medical Center, Village Pointe Health Center)

  • Support patients and their families as they attend clinic visits and infusion treatments. Perform hospitality and department assistant tasks. (Weekdays, Weekends, Nebraska Medical Center only, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) (Village Pointe Health Center hours vary, weekdays only.)

Patient Mail (Nebraska Medical Center)

  • Brighten patients’ day by delivering their mail and Well Wishers e-mails. (Weekdays, afternoons)

 

Volunteer opportunities with additional training and requirements

Angel Hearts and Hands

  • Individual volunteers or groups interested in knitting, sewing and crafting projects to benefit our patients. Projects include, but are not limited to, prayer shawls, lap blankets, turbans and baby hats.

Animal Assisted Therapy (Pet Therapy) (Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center)

  • Animal assisted therapy (pet therapy) is a method of reducing stress incurred by hospitalization giving patients the benefits of shared pet companionship. Your dog must be a certified pet therapy dog with a recognized organization to participate. (Weekdays, Varied Hours)

Spiritual Care (Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center)

  • Ensures patients are connected with their spiritual communities and/or the medical center’s resources. An interview with a representative of Spiritual Care is required prior to placement. (Weekdays and Weekends, As Needed)
