Next Chapter Book Club (NCBC) Volunteer Facilitator - The Next Chapter Book Club (NCBC) provides adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities with all reading level abilities the opportunity to read, discuss books and socialize while participating in an age appropriate activity. Location of service: Community setting such as a local coffee shop, deli, etc. Length of service: Approximately one and a half hours weekly Position Summary: With support from the Next Chapter Book Club (NCBC) Program Coordinator, volunteer facilitators guide activities in weekly, community-based book clubs for adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities. The primary function of this position is to promote literacy skills, social connectedness, and community inclusion for book club members. Working in teams of two or three, volunteer facilitators also provide NCBC staff with regular feedback.Facilitators come from all walks and stages of life and include students, family members of individuals with disabilities, and retirees looking for an opportunity to make a difference. Qualifications: Desire and commitment to work with adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities (previous experience is not necessary, but may be helpful) Enthusiasm, creativity, and good “people skills” are essential Position Responsibilities: Promptly attend weekly, one-hour book club meetings at designated community location Monitor member attendance; notify NCBC staff of any extended member absence Complete end of book surveys and communicate with NCBC staff (i.e. respond to emails or phone calls) Notify NCBC staff two weeks in advance of needing a new book; lead members in a vote for the new book Use activities and strategies learned in training to promote literacy skills, social connections, and community inclusion among your book club members Respect the talent, abilities, and privacy of all book club members Compliance requirements (to be paid for by Ollie Webb Center, Inc.): Criminal Background Check Child & Adult Protective Services Registry Check Certification in CPR and 1st Aid
