Since its founding in 1865, The Salvation Army's mission has been to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of all people without discrimination. The Salvation Army serves as a beacon of help and hope, providing food, housing, youth development, material assistance, behavioral health support, older adult services, anti-human trafficking support and emergency disaster services to thousands seeking support and assistance in the Omaha metro. Here are some service highlights from 2021: 86% of total clients across The Salvation Army of Omaha's seven behavioral health programs reported a reduction in symptoms after receiving support, counseling and help. 158 individuals/families found safety and security in our transitional housing programs, and another 41 individuals/families moved into home sweet home through our permanent housing programs. More than 8,000 hot meals were served by our Winter Night Watch program to those experiencing homelessness and food insecurity during this winter's frigid nights. We also distributed thousands of winter coats, blankets, hats, gloves, scarves and socks. This past Christmas, The Salvation Army distributed more than 12,000 toys to parents and guardians who couldn't afford to buy Christmas gifts for their children. "This kind of help -- from hot meals and Christmas gifts to school supplies and mental health support -- is largely unnoticed by most, but is critically important because it supports the dignity and the humanity of our fellow neighbors," said Salvation Army Divisional Commander Major Greg Thompson.
- Nearly 56,000 meals were served to individuals, children and families in need during 2021. An additional 5,200 grocery orders were filled by our food pantry.
- More than 10,600 backpacks stuffed with school supplies were distributed to kids in Omaha and beyond at the start of the 2021 school year.
- Nearly 3,000 kids in preschool through 12th grade enrolled in sports, arts, music and after-school programs at our corps community centers in 2021.
