What We Do

Omaha Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) is a volunteer-led and self-sustaining chapter of AVP-USA.  We offer guidance, support and workshops based on the belief that there is a power in each of us that is able to transform violent and destructive situations into liberating and constructive experiences and cooperative behaviors.  We call this Transforming Power. It is in you and in your opponent.  It's at the heart of AVP.

Serving in Nebraska prisons from 1995 - 2021, Omaha AVP has expanded into the community, offering experiential conflict resolution workshops in the Omaha area.  Current programs include weekly in-prison nonviolence meetings, monthly community filed trips,  mini 2-hour and longer 3-day workshops for incarcerated citizens as well as commmunity members, and a variety of community outreach offerings and event.   Omaha AVP invites collaboration with organizations that support or complement our mission.

Donations are used to fund in-prison and in community-based events and workshops.  Thank you for supporting  AVP's mission and philosophy.

Interesting Info
  • A December tradition: AVP brings holiday and greeting cards into prison to freely share with incarcerated citizens. In 2023, AVP shared more than 500 cards!
  • Volunteers contributed 3600 hours in 2023. Including in-prison and community participation, close to 7000 hours were tallied.
  • Omaha AVP sponsors dosens of community field trips annually for prisoners transitioning to the community.
