KANEKO

Event:
MONUMENTAL

KANEKO’S major fall exhibition features Richard Hunt, one of five international artists selected for display at Omaha’s new Gene Leahy Mall. KANEKO partners with Metropolitan Entertainment & Convention Authority (MECA) and the City of Omaha, and the Nebraska Tourism Commission in this project with each artist committing to a major exhibition at KANEKO. This exhibition also features Faheem Majeed, Charles Kay, Jr., and Sarah Rowe, two nationally known and one locally recognized artists of diverse backgrounds and ethnicity.  They work in different mediums and were chosen to offer audiences national and international recognized talent and important social and environmental issues. Each artist brings  their own narrative of their culture’s history and its connection to the land.

Richard Hunt focuses on African culture and celebrates individuals in American history. MONUMENTAL features over 50 pieces of Richard Hunt’s work, who, at 86 is the most collected public artist in the U.S.  Recipient of the International Sculpture Center’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Hunt is also one of the world’s most influential artists.

Faheem Majeed’s work represents systems, infrastructure and how it affects the culture of a city.

Charles Kay, Jr., a descendent of East Asian and Pacific Islander cultures, explores the connection to our oceans and the peace it brings to our senses.

Sarah Rowe, Lakota Nation, uses her artwork and visual vocabulary to tie into educational programming that translates modern concepts using ancient wisdom.

During his exhibition at KANEKO, Hunt will use classical music and dance as it interacts with his work. KANEKO will partner with Omaha Symphony Orchestra and Omaha Under the Radar for performances during the exhibition. KANEKO’s regularly scheduled MOVEMENT Series performances will include a commission for local non-profit TBD Dance Collective to choreograph and perform a new dance piece inspired by and performed among the Hunt sculptures. KANEKO’s GREAT MINDS lecture series is currently seeking an expert possibly on the movement of Black culture through history.
