Building support for housing needs: Metropolitan Utilities District

As Do Good Days quickly approaches, we are often asked, “What does it mean to do good?” For Metropolitan Utilities District it means championing support for housing needs in our community.

As a customer-owned public utility, M.U.D.’s mission is to provide safe, reliable and cost-effective natural gas and water services to the community. They are making this happen every day for a population of more than 600,000 in Omaha and the surrounding areas.

M.U.D.’s 900-plus employees are dedicated to delivering these life-essential services that you and I depend on each day. Utilities are used for heating, cooking, drinking, cleaning and laundry, which are vital to maintaining our healthy and comfortable homes.

Although M.U.D. strives to keep rates among the lowest in the country, some customers in the community continue to struggle with utility expenses. M.U.D. began a utility assistance program in 1983 for seniors, people with disabilities and limited-income customers suffering severe financial hardship. The M.U.D. Home Fund connects those in need with those who can help. To date, the fund has raised more than $5 million and served more than 37,000 households.

In 2023, Metropolitan Utilities District employees volunteered over 375 hours in the community.

One of the major fundraisers is the annual Heat the Streets Run & Walk for Warmth. This event, held in partnership with Omaha Public Power District, is held the first Saturday in March to raise funds and awareness for utility assistance programs. In 2024, the event raised more than $175,000. Mark your calendar for next year’s event – March 1, 2025.

M.U.D. also supports Habitat for Humanity of Omaha through various programs, including providing natural gas water heaters for homes that are constructed.
