Wisdom Wednesday: Best Practices for Supporting LGBTQIA

This workshop will review important terminology surrounding the LGBTQIA community, touch on some of the biggest issues facing LGBTQIA youth, and provide resources and best practice suggestions for supporting these youth.

At the end of this presentation, participants will:
- Recognize the latest LGBTQIA terminology,
- Understand issues facing LGBTQIA youth
- Gain some resources and strategies for supporting these youth

Dr. Ferial Pearson is an Assistant Professor in the Teacher Education Department at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. She has been an educator for 20 years and has won several local and national awards for her work with youth, including the National GLSEN Educator of the Year Award, The National Education Association’s Virginia Uribe Award for Creative Leadership in Human Rights Award, and the Kennedy Center’s Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher of the year award. She is the co-founder of Pride Prom, the Open Arms Trans Social Group, and is the faculty sponsor for a number of groups at UNO, including Melanated Queerations, a support group for Queer and Trans students of color.
