Diana: Share random acts of kindness throughout the metro

Guest blogger Diana Gleisberg is a passionate volunteer, world traveler, concert enthusiast and massive Nebraska fan. Connect with her on Facebook and Instagram, @volunteeromaha.

February is home to several holidays such as Valentine’s Day, Groundhog’s Day and President’s Day. SHARE Omaha is quite fond of another holiday occurring this month: Random Acts of Kindness Day, celebrated on February 17th.

With SHARE Omaha, there are thousands of ways to take part in Random Acts of Kindness Day. Right now 200+ nonprofits serving the Omaha metro have 300+ ways to serve. Collectively, they are in need of 1600+ items to help them carry out their missions. YOU are 5 clicks (or less) away from making the metro better for all of your neighbors, and spreading a little kindness.

How can offering your time, talent and treasure warm hearts? We’ve seen a mother donate to B&B Sports Academy because she wanted to see other children have the same opportunities as her sons: to learn the discipline and values that are central to the martial arts world. We’ve seen contractors offer their downtime to support agencies in need of skilled labor. We’ve seen coworkers rallying their offices for charity events, supply drives and fundraisers.

Why are Random Acts of Kindness important to our community? RaeAnn Knoell of the Omaha Home for Boys praises volunteers for the integral role their random acts of kindness play in our community. “We could not operate Youth Mart deliveries and pick-ups efficiently or effectively without our Truck Brigade volunteers …. I think it’s important for people to remember that it doesn’t take a huge time commitment or other resources to make a difference. Find a cause you’re passionate about and align your volunteer efforts with a nonprofit that supports that cause. You’ll not only feel good about giving back but you’ll also be supporting a cause that’s close to your heart.”

Chantelle Green of WELLCOM shared similar sentiments: “Random acts of kindness inspire us to be our best selves – it’s one of the ultimate ways to ‘share it forward’ because it inspires the recipient to be kind. There’s something about receiving spontaneous kindness that make us want to be kind.”

We can all participate in Random Acts of Kindness Day and #SHAREitForward by joining the challenge to do good in the metro. Giving really is greater when we give together.
