Social Distance Volunteer Opportunities

Care Packages: Sponsor a Family (Statewide)
Sign up to sponsor a specific family in need! Lutheran Family Services serves our communities most vulnerable populations and they are in need now more than even in this global crisis. Sign up to purchase and deliver food and other staples (toilet paper, hygiene products, diapers, etc.) to a family in need. Deliveries will be made to the families’ doorsteps in compliance with social distancing measures. Another option would be to set up a delivery from an area grocery store. Please reach out today to be assigned a family!

Digital Ambassador (Statewide)
We need your help to spread the word! We are all on social media all day anyway, right? Sign up to be a Digital Ambassador and share our work with your friends and family. There are also opportunities to help us reach our goals that support the families we serve through our crowdfunding page.

Messages of Hope
Social Distancing can be extremely isolating. Sign up to write cards or make a phone call with messages of hope to our families and individuals who are feeling the most alone during this trying time. Cheer someone up today and let them know you care!
Volunteer Tele-Mentor (Community Services – Omaha and Lincoln)
This is a unique opportunity to support newly arrived refugees facing numerous challenges in transitioning to life in the United States. Volunteers will work with an assigned mentee and assist them with pathways to integration.
In response to Covid-19, volunteers will meet ONLY by telephone or video chat in order to comply with social distancing. Coordination of these efforts will be assisted by the Community Services Volunteer Coordinator.

Socially-Distant Global Roots Refugee Agriculture Program Volunteer (Community Services – Omaha)
Play in the dirt! Global Roots is a refugee agriculture program in its first year at Lutheran Family Services (LFS.) Refugee gardeners are growing food for their families, food to sell at farmers’ markets, or both. Now is a critical time to prepare our plots of land for more than 10,000 seedlings that the program manager has been tending.
In response to COVID-19, this opportunity is only available to individuals or groups that already live together. You will need rakes (the short-toothed metal kind,) work gloves, and trash bags. Boots would be a good idea as well.
