What We Do
The Refugee Empowerment Center provides educational and direct services to refugees. Our staff are former refugees who provide intensive case management and support services to current and newly arrived refugees. Our programming goals are to ensure refugees become self-sufficient and integrate successfully. REC has a 92% success rate in assisting refugees with becoming employed. Our programs include job readiness and placement, three levels of ELL classes, behavioral health support and driver's education.
NEW: Project Refuge. Established October 2019.
WHY ARE WE MAKING CANDLES? Many refugee women lack formal work experience when they first arrive. Creating these candles is a good first step in gaining identity and experiences outside of the home, and an opportunity to practice English. “When you’re learning English it can be intimidating to speak up. It’s been amazing to see people working together, practicing English, and really taking pride in their work. And there are friendships forming from people all over the world.”
A lot of effort was put into designing a great product. These are lotion candles, which means you can rub the melted wax onto your skin and use it as a lotion! All ingredients are natural: Natural Soy Wax, Coconut Oil, Vitamin E, Avocado Oil, and Essential Oils. Proceeds help fund the Refugee Empowerment Center.
