What We Do
MDA is leading the fight to free individuals - and the families who love them- from the harm of Muscular Dystrophy and muscle-related diseases that take away strength, independence and life.
Founded nearly 70 years ago, the Muscular Dystrophy Association helps kids and adults live longer and grow stronger by finding research breakthroughs across diseases, caring for individuals from day one, and empowering families with services and support in hometowns across America. A significant number of diseases that impact MDA patients disproportionately impact youth, or are commonly diagnosed in patients under the age of 18. None of the neuromuscular diseases under MDA’s umbrella currently have a cure.
Since 1955, MDA Summer Camp provides young MDA community members the opportunity to attend a week-long, sleepover summer camp at no cost. Being with other kids that are just like them makes this camp “the best week of the year.” Campers range in age from 8-17, and participate in activities like swimming, sports, archery, canoeing, and even zip-lining. MDA camp grounds and activities are designed to remove many of the obstacles young MDA community members may face and all camps are supported by round-the-clock medical staff and trained volunteer counselors.
