What We Do
Families in Action (FIA) is a participant-led organization that seeks to lift up and amplify the voices, visions and wisdom of Latina women and families as they seek to create a healthy future for themselves, their children, and their neighborhoods.
The mission of FIA was written by FIA participants themselves: "FIA is a community of Latina women and families in the Omaha area promoting health, well-being, and knowledge. We strive to be role models for our children and the community." FIA is proud to be a long-standing, community-based program in South Omaha where the voices of Latina women are lifted up and honored as the cornerstone of FIA’s mission.
Current programming includes: culturally and linguistically appropriate physical activity opportunities, health/nutrition education, and mental wellness programs in Spanish for Latina women and their children. All FIA programs are dreamed, designed and delivered by Latina participant leaders. Due to the dedication, perseverance and vision of these Latina leaders, FIA is the only stand-alone, grassroots non-profit in Nebraska to win a national award from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for Health Innovation.
