Free & Online: Between the Lines with Elaine Weiss

For the eighth consecutive year, the Omaha Public Library Foundation will celebrate literacy and raise dollars for Omaha Public Library through its noted event, Between the Lines.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the October 6 event is now free and hosted online.

On Tuesday, October 6, 2020, the Omaha Public Library Foundation will welcome author and journalist Elaine Weiss, whose 2018 book, The Woman’s Hour: The Great Fight to Win the Vote, offers an engaging and historic narrative of the days leading up to the passage of the 19th Amendment. Granting women the right to vote proved to be a difficult effort, to say the least. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the amendment’s ratification.

Elaine Weiss is an award-winning journalist and writer. Her magazine feature writing has been recognized with prizes from the Society of Professional Journalists, and her byline has appeared in The Atlantic, Harper’s, New York Times, Boston Globe, and Philadelphia Inquirer.

On October 6, the Omaha Public Library Foundation will also present Freddie Gray with its 2020 Barbara Bock-Mavis Leadership Award. The award recognizes Gray's service to the Omaha Public Library Foundation and as a former Omaha Public Library trustee. Gray served on the Board of Education for Omaha Public Schools and as its president. She routinely advocates and serves for public education at local and national levels. She contributed through the Council of Urban Boards of Education Racial Isolation Taskforce. Gray also served with the Learning Community Coordinating Council and Nebraska Association of School Boards.

Created in 2017, the Barbara Bock-Mavis Leadership Award celebrates contributions by Omaha Public Library Foundation volunteers and supporters. Bock-Mavis, who received the first award, long advocated starting a library foundation and offered to serve as the library foundation’s first director, a volunteer and unpaid post she held for eight years beginning in 1985. Previous award recipients include Jim Kineen and Eileen Wirth.
