Board Member

To advise the Director of Contracts, provide organizational oversight and governance, oversee fiscal policy and practices, and to help expand the commercial services department. To be an ambassador of Goodwill Specialty Services, Inc. (GSSI), assist in educating the community about the organization, and provide general promotion of Goodwill in support of the organization’s vision and mission.

Major Responsibilities
• Provide oversight, advice and guidance to the AbilityOne team;
• Attend board of directors meetings;
• Provide oversight of and adherence to policies and procedures;
• Provide advice on GSSI governance, fiscal matters, and mission;
• Provide insight into expanded commercial services;
• Review and approve the annual budget;
• Review Board reports and provide feedback;
• Promote GSSI services and serve as an advocate for GSSI within the Omaha metropolitan community
• Support GSSI through time, talent and treasure. Participate in or contribute to fundraising events for general operations and programs and assist with outreach to the metropolitan philanthropic community.

Length of Service
Three-year term as approved by the Board of Directors. Board members can serve up to three, three-year terms as approved by the Board of Directors.

Meetings
The Board meets quarterly at the Goodwill headquarters in the months of March, June, September and November. Meetings typically start at 2:00 PM and last 60 minutes.

Expectations
• Meetings. Attend quarterly Board meetings on a regular basis. If face-to-face attendance is not possible, arrangements will be made for Board members to call-in or attend virtually.
• Goodwill Engagement. Be familiar with GSSI operations, finances, policies and procedures. Participate in Board Orientation and Onboarding activities.
• Board Development. GSSI staff will provide training and education to GSSI board members on mission programming during board meetings. When able, board members are asked to participate in internal/external board training and development opportunities. Board members are also required to complete the board assessment survey when it is administered.
• Expertise. Share your professional expertise and experience with GSSI team members when needed. Be willing and open to being contacted by members of the GSSI team as it relates to specific work-related matters.
• Special Events. Attend GSSI special events that support the AbilityOne Program awareness and employee engagement as often as possible but at least two per year. These events might include fundraising events, employee picnic, Thanksgiving lunch, and the Christmas holiday pot-luck lunch.
• Community Relations. Promote GSSI and its programs throughout the community. In an effort to provide education on GSSI services, identify potential partners, meetings and community events at which GSSI staff can attend and speak.
• Build Community Support and Cultivate Donors. Help identify potential new board members, organization supporters and donors – individuals, corporate and foundations. Assist GSSI staff with cultivating prospective stakeholders by making introductions and accompanying staff during visits.
• Solicitations. Help solicit contributions on behalf of Goodwill, or accompany Goodwill executives on solicitation visits. Help arrange for financial or in-kind donation of resources to Goodwill.
