Add your voice to a linguistic portrait of Omaha!

Bemis Center is working with artist Ekene Ijeoma to create a voice portrait of Omaha called “A Counting”. There are over 100 languages spoken in Omaha and we aim to showcase the incredible diversity of our city. For this project, Ijeoma is asking for residents of Omaha to visit a-counting.us/oma or call 402-251-2426 and count to 100. Whatever language(s) you speak (English included), Ijeoma wants to capture all voices and accents, especially those of marginalized communities.

“A Counting” was created by Ekene Ijeoma and his group Poetic Justice at MIT Media Lab in response to the U.S. Census which has historically undercounted and oppressed communities. In a divided society, “A Counting” is a meditation on what a truly united country would sound like. Omaha's voices in “A Counting” will be on view as part of the exhibition “All Together, Amongst Many: Reflections on Empathy” at Bemis Center June 5–September 18, 2021.
