Skutt Catholic High School's Community Involvement Day during Do Good Days

Skutt Catholic High School’s mission is to form and educate young men and women to become Christian leaders who empower others, promote justice and initiate change. One way that Skutt Catholic fulfills this mission is through its annual Community Involvement Day. Coincidentally, this spring’s Community Involvement Day falls during Do Good Days. What perfect timing to get students out doing good during National Volunteer Week!

Skutt Catholic’s Community Involvement Day has been a tradition for many years, and it has become an integral part of the school's culture. Community Involvement Day provides students with an opportunity to learn about the issues facing our metro and to take action to make a positive difference.

This April 19th, 2023, almost 370 sophomores and juniors will participate in the event. Each HawkTime (homeroom) class is supervised by their homeroom teacher with another teacher chaperone. The students will arrive at their sites via volunteer parent drivers. The projects range from working with local food banks and homeless shelters to cleaning up local parks and neighborhoods. The variety of projects ensures that students can explore different areas of service and engage with a diverse range of community members.

Skutt Catholic students will serve at various sites on April 19th, including the Society of St. Vincent de Paul - Holy Family Community Center, City Sprouts, Completely KIDS, Angel Guardians, Inc., Open Door Mission, Heartland Hope Mission, Educare of Omaha, Inc. (Indian Hill), Boyd Elementary ACP Program, Stephen Center, Good Samaritan Millard, Catholic Charities of Omaha - Juan Diego Pantry, Lothrop Magnet, Saint Joseph Tower Assisted Living, Catholic Charities of Omaha - St. Teresa of Calcutta Pantry, Heart Ministry Center, Hillcrest Mable Rose, The Hope Center for Kids, Educare of Omaha, Inc. (Gateway), Essential Pregnancy Services, Intercultural Senior Center, Munroe-Meyer Institute, Catholic Charities of Omaha - Martin de Porres Senior Center, New Cassel Retirement Center and the Food Bank for the Heartland.

The impact of Community Involvement Day extends beyond the day itself. Students often continue their service work with the organizations they worked with on Community Involvement Day, building ongoing relationships and making a lasting impact on the community. Additionally, the experience of volunteering often inspires students to become more engaged in their community and to seek out further opportunities for service and leadership.

In addition to the benefits for the community, Community Involvement Day also has a positive impact on the Skutt Catholic community. The day fosters a sense of teamwork and camaraderie among students and staff, as they work together to make a difference in their community. It also provides an opportunity for students to reflect on the school's mission and values, and to see those values in action.

The hope of the day is to instill in Skutt Catholic's students a sense of Christ-centered service, in line with the school's mission to make a difference. The school aims to prepare students to become Christian leaders who empower others, promote justice and initiate change.
